The Suite has retained fifteen original chandeliers from the hotel's opening in 1902, which are the largest collection of hand painted chandeliers in Europe. The Suite was fully refurbished in 2004 and boasts two specially commissioned murals, gold leaf detail around the columns and a beautiful interior design. The Holyrood Suite, situated on the ground floor of the Balmoral, has a corner position with spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle, the Old Town and Arthur's seat. The room has long rectangular windows, allowing natural daylight to flood the room. Original chandeliers from the hotel's opening in 1902 and the beautiful ornate cornicing provide the perfect setting for a conference (120 people) and 200 guests for cocktails.
The Waverley Suite, situated on the ground floor, has large windows along one side of the wall with views of The Old Town and Arthur's Seat. Suitable for up to 70 guests theatre style, 40 guests in "U" shape seating or up to 60 guests for a dinner. The Waverley adjoins the Holyrood Suite and can be used either as a syndicate room or for pre-dinner drinks.

The Balmoral originally opened in 1902 as the North British Hotel, a traditional railway hotel adjacent to Waverley Station. For travellers arriving by train the hotel provided comfortable and elegant lodgings, before they continued their journeys.
The hotel is located in the very heart of the city at 1 Princes Street, the main shopping area overlooking Edinburgh Castle. The Balmoral is a landmark in its own right with its majestic clock tower, which can be seen from all around. Given that the hotel is adjacent to the station, the clock is always set two minutes fast to ensure that people don't miss their trains - except on New Year's Eve of course!
Edinburgh is a beautiful city, built on a series of volcanic hills. The architecture is stunning and dates back to the 12th century in the Old Town, with the New Town offering a more 'modern' style from the 18th century. Often considered a perennial destination, 'Eventful Edinburgh' offers something for everyone, whether you live there or are simply visiting. For example, there are 20 golf courses surrounding the city; theatres featuring the latest West End shows; the Edinburgh International Festival during the summer; Hogmanay New Year celebrations in the winter and many other world-class events. Most of the city's inhabitants both live and work in the city centre, which gives it a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
Edinburgh Castle is built on the formerly volcanic 'Mound'. The route downhill from there to the Palace of Holyroodhouse (home of the royal family whenever they visit Edinburgh) is known as the Royal Mile. In the past, this street was lined with merchants selling their wares; today it is still a buzzing central point for cafe society, shops and street activities.
To the east of the hotel lies Calton Hill, an acropolis-style monument overlooking Princes Street, which has earned the city its nickname of 'Athens of the North'. Another familiar monument is Greyfriars Bobby, the little dog who famously guarded his master's grave for many years and was considered to be part of the community.
During your stay at The Balmoral, our Concierge desk will be delighted to assist with any questions you have regarding sightseeing opportunities. They will also provide you with a map.
